Most important safety regulations in the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

 

please note the following rules concerning lab safety as mentioned in our yearly mandatory safety seminar (online since 2023):

 

  • all dangerous work (described in the following lines)
    • is allowed only in the presence of a second person ONLY

 

  • when working with chemicals you MUST inform yourself beforehand about
    • precautions for you and your colleagues next to you when using them, proper and safe storage, correct disposal

 ·          safety data sheets (E/ D) must be read and are available at

    • use protective gear like lab coat, safety glasses, gloves, closed shoes
    • amounts  >1 L or >1 kg of inflammable substances MUST be stored in these special containers in each lab
    • all chemical rooms must be locked when the last person leaves the lab

 

  • when using lab equipment which is potentially harmful to you or your lab colleagues (centrifuges, autoclaves, safety burners, etc.)
  • you MUST be introduced by an experienced person
  • you MUST read the manual carefully, check “Betriebsanweisung” and Gefährdungsbeurteilung”

 

  • when handling liquid nitrogen
    • you MUST be introduced by an experienced person
    • use our special elevator ONLY for transport up- or downstairs (in all other elevators you are responsible that nobody enters the elevator when transporting liquid nitrogen or gas bottles (e.g. CO2))
    • make sure that you are working in a highly ventilated place (NOT in the cold room)
    • use protective equipment like cold protection gloves (NOT single use gloves!), safety glasses

  • gas bottles
    • must be handled by trained persons ONLY
    • DO NOT connect or disconnect or transport gas bottles to gas lines without being trained!

 

  • when fetching dry ice in -2
  • let door open
  • in case of alarm there leave room immediately

 

  • when handling GMOs (genetically modified organisms, S1 only at the moment)
    • you MUST have an instruction by your group leader beforehand
    • use protective gear like lab coat, safety glasses, gloves, closed shoes
    • you MUST autoclave these GMOs or contaminated equipment like single use pipettes afterwards

you are responsible that YOUR trash is really (!) autoclaved and disposed as normal trash afterwards

 

  • when working in our chemical storage labs (“Säurekeller”) at the back of our building
    • use face shield when handling ethanol or methanol (find them in the shelf there)
    • leave door open during handling ethanol or methanol
    • DO NOT fill more than 5x 5 L bottles at a time

  • it is NOT ALLOWED to store any food or beverages in the labs including cold rooms. Store them in the kitchen areas instead

 

  • in case of fire alarm everybody MUST leave the building immediately and wait in front of ZBMZ or VF until fire brigade arrives. Close windows, switch on the light and close door behind you if possible. Tell the fire department if somebody could be still in the building.
